Assessing and Supporting Leaders in Mining
Conducting 360-degree assessments and feedback sessions with leaders across a large multinational mining business
Summary/overview
This organisation wanted to utilise 360-degree assessments as part of their leadership development process across their business. We partnered with them initially in early 2023, and have been supporting leaders across their business units over the past two years.
Situation & Challenges
To better support the development of leaders across their different locations and operations, this mining organisation wanted to begin implementing 360-degree assessments. This was driven by a recognition that they had a large number of very proficient technical leaders, who could benefit from developing other leadership skills as they stepped up into people leadership roles.
The organisation had previously been administering psychometric assessments for selection themselves, but did not have an established provider for development assessments. Initially, they were seeking to partner with a provider who could advise them on other available 360-degree assessment tools and provide access to these, so we provided them with information and recommendations around three robust and reliable tools that we use frequently.
Our Solution
After initial discussions with the client, we identified the most appropriate tool for their purposes and established a process for setting up and administering assessments.
To further support development, we also offered 1.5-hour feedback and debriefing sessions for participants with one of our psychologists, where they would explain the tool, talk through the results in the report and explore any discrepancies between rater scores, identify their strengths and areas for development in relation to their role, and come up with some goals and next steps for themselves.
After the initial participants went through in the first half of 2023, People Solutions became the default provider for 360-degree assessments and feedback for this organisation. We have established a consistent and streamlined process for them for requesting new 360-degree assessments and provide yearly reporting on progress and numbers to their central Human Resources department.
Result
Since the project’s inception, we have conducted assessments and feedback sessions for over 60 leaders at this organisation, both in Australia and internationally, with more continuing to come in regularly.
Feedback from the project sponsors indicates that they’ve seen some development from technical leaders in specific target areas.
